Removing Brown Spots may be a Freeze a Way!

Close-up of facial brown spots and age-related pigmentation that may be evaluated for cryotherapy treatment.A brown spot is a description, not a diagnosis. That distinction matters before freezing an age spot on the face or assuming liquid nitrogen is the right answer. In Plano, Texas, our liquid nitrogen cryotherapy at Skin M.D. and Beyond is used for certain superficial skin lesions. Fiona Wright, MD, who completed postgraduate dermatology training at Cardiff University, evaluates the area first so treatment is based on what the growth or discoloration actually is.

Can Liquid Nitrogen Be Used for Dark Spots?

Cryotherapy can be appropriate for selected superficial lesions. Our current treatment page lists seborrheic keratoses, actinic keratoses, warts, and skin tags among the concerns that may be treated with liquid nitrogen. It also notes that the method does not treat deeper lesions such as moles.

This is why a flat patch of sun-related pigmentation should not automatically be approached the same way as a raised or crusted growth. Our guide to brown spots and age spots discusses solar lentigines and other types of discoloration, while the skin pigmentation page covers additional causes of uneven color.

A changing or otherwise concerning spot should be evaluated before cosmetic removal. In some cases, identifying the lesion correctly is more important than deciding how quickly it can be taken off.

What Happens During Cryotherapy?

Liquid nitrogen rapidly freezes the selected tissue. Depending on the lesion, the area may be allowed to thaw and then frozen again. After treatment, blistering and crusting can occur as the skin heals.

On the face, the crust commonly comes away in about 10 to 14 days, although healing varies. The area may look pink afterward. A longer freeze for a thicker lesion can also leave a lighter mark or scar, and some growths need more than one session. Knowing about these possibilities beforehand makes it easier to decide whether cryotherapy fits your priorities.

What if the Brown Spots Are Flat or Widespread?

When the main concern is broader sun-related discoloration rather than one isolated growth, another treatment may be more suitable. Our brown spots and age spots page discusses options such as skincare, chemical peels, laser resurfacing, microneedling, and PhotoFacial IPL. IPL can treat selected areas of brown pigmentation and sun damage without freezing individual lesions.

Rough or scaly sun-damaged areas may also represent actinic keratoses, which are precancerous lesions rather than ordinary cosmetic age spots. Our actinic keratosis page explains why these areas deserve proper evaluation and treatment.
