Many women are unaware that procedures such as ThermiVA Vaginal Rejuvenation at Skin MD and Beyond are available to treat SUI. Because of the lack of information about vaginal rejuvenation for stress urinary incontinence, many continue to live in fear of embarrassing urine leaks, often avoiding situations that may cause an embarrassing accident.

Stress urinary incontinence is often related to what is called vaginal relaxation or looseness. Combining treatment for stress urinary incontinence with vaginal rejuvenation, Dr. Wright explains is logical as vaginal rejuvenation is designed to tighten and strengthen the muscles around the vagina which addresses the root cause of many cases of stress-related incontinence. ThermiVa vaginal rejuvenation will reduce both the inner and outer diameters of the vagina, leaving a smaller opening and better muscle control. An added benefit to non-surgical vaginal tightening rejuvenation is that in addition to treating SUI, it has shown to be effective in enhancing sensation during intimate encounters. How does vaginal rejuvenation treat stress-related urinary incontinence?

When radiofrequency energy is delivered onto the human skin, it penetrates the epidermis down into the skin’s second layer, the dermis. There the RF energy converts to heat. In the dermis, the presence of heat causes a cellular response in the dermal collagen. The collagen immediately remodels, as the molecules contract and tighten. Next, fibroblasts, the cells that produce collagen, are stimulated to create new collagen. This is basically a “wound response,” where the body thinks it has been wounded. This response is to trigger an increase in collagen production at the “wound” location to heal the injury. Since collagen is the protein in the skin responsible for the skin’s overall support structure, the result is firmer, tighter skin.

As it does with skin all over the body, radiofrequency energy applied to the tissue and mucosa both inside and outside the vagina causes the same remodeling, tightening reaction. Plus, new collagen production is triggered, which further tightens these tissues for months afterward.

This tightening helps women control mild stress-related urinary incontinence. The RF energy also works to firm the tissues under the bladder, adding more control.

How is the ThermiVa procedure performed?

A small s-shaped wand applicator is used to deliver the RF energy both to the interior walls of the vagina and to the external labia and other tissues. When the RF energy converts to heat, the feeling is similar to a “hot” massage. The procedure takes just 30 minutes. It is non-invasive and there isn’t any downtime. Once delivered, the RF energy immediately begins tightening the interior and exterior tissues.

Is there recovery after vaginal rejuvenation treatment?

A ThermiVa treatment at Skin M.D. is non-invasive and not painful. Patients can return to normal activities immediately after their session. This includes exercise or sexual activity.

Are there any side effects of using radiofrequency energy?

Radio waves are all around us all the time. They are simply not concentrated as in a ThermiVa procedure. The only reactions to RF treatments are usually very mild swelling on the treated skin, redness, and some sensitivity, but these issues pass quickly. Otherwise, patients have no downtime and can return to their normal activities immediately. These are not laser procedures.

Is vaginal rejuvenation treatment painful?

The ThermiVa handpiece was designed to deliver radiofrequency energy but with the most comfort at the same time. The width of the active tip that delivers the radiofrequency energy is just 0.5 inches. Its shape is patterned after the natural curvature of the vaginal walls. Warm ultrasound gel is used during treatment. When the RF energy is delivered patients feel gentle warming in the vagina, but the sensation is not painful.

How much does vaginal rejuvenation cost?

The costs of these treatments can vary depending upon the extent of rejuvenation the patient seeks. For instance, treating specifically stress incontinence will cost less than also having the outer tissues treated as well. When you’re here for your consultation, and Dr. Wright gets a better idea of what your treatment goals are, she will give you the estimate of the cost of your ThermiVa treatments.

Does insurance cover vaginal rejuvenation?

Vaginal rejuvenation is considered to be an elective procedure by insurance companies. As such, it is typically not covered. However, if you have a medical diagnosis of moderate to severe stress urinary incontinence, your insurance provider may cover part of the treatment. This is something to explore with your provider.
