Pores do not suddenly grow wider with every birthday, but they can become much easier to see as the skin changes. Loss of elasticity can reduce the support around each opening, while congestion can exaggerate its appearance. At Skin MD and Beyond in Plano, TX, Fiona Wright, MD evaluates large pores and blackheads in the context of your skin type and age. Dr. Wright has also studied cosmetic chemistry and formulated her own skin care line, giving her added insight into how topical ingredients interact with aging and blemish-prone skin.
Why Does Aging Make Pores More Visible?
Pores are small openings in the skin, and they do not contain muscles. That means they cannot literally open, close, or permanently shrink.
What changes with age is the tissue surrounding them. As skin gradually loses elasticity, the edges of a pore may have less structural support and look broader. Other changes in skin texture can make that contrast more noticeable as well.
Congestion can add to the problem. Oil and dead skin cells may collect in a pore and stretch its visible opening. When that material is exposed to air and oxidizes, it forms the dark surface associated with a blackhead. Someone can have age-related pore visibility, congestion, or both.
What Can Improve the Appearance of Enlarged Pores?
The first step is identifying what is making pores stand out. If buildup is the main issue, a consistent cleansing and exfoliation routine may help keep the openings clearer. Our skin care and aging recommendations can also account for dryness, sensitivity, oil production, and other changes that affect texture over time.
When home care is not changing the texture much, in-office options can be considered. Chemical peels may help loosen oil and dead skin within clogged pores, while microdermabrasion and DermaSweep-MD remove surface buildup and refine texture. If blackheads occur alongside breakouts, acne care may need to be part of the plan rather than treating the pores by themselves.
For age-related changes, treatments that stimulate collagen and elastin may improve the support surrounding visible pores. Our enlarged-pore page discusses Dermapen skin needling for this reason.
A Better Way to Think About “Shrinking” Pores
Pore care is really about reducing what makes them stand out, not trying to force them closed. We look at congestion, elasticity, and texture to understand why they have become more visible.
If your pores have become more prominent over time, Skin MD and Beyond can assess what may be contributing. Call 972-608-0808 or schedule an appointment with our Plano, TX team to talk through your skin care and treatment options.
