According to the American Cancer Society, the most common cancer in the US is skin cancer. Over the last few decades, the number of patients diagnosed with skin cancer has continually increased. Skin cancer is diagnosed more often in one year than all other types of cancer combined. However, thanks to being visible on the skin, skin cancer is also one of the easiest to diagnose early for treatment.
What is skin cancer?
Skin cancer is a cancer that is often caused by UV ray exposure from the sun. It may also be obtained from tanning bed use. With proper protection, most patients can maintain a healthy body free from skin cancer. However, when concerns arise, patients need to work with their dermatologist to get a proper diagnosis and to discuss treatment.
What is a skin cancer screening?
Skin cancer screenings are appointments with a dermatologist that should occur at least every year. These annual screenings are performed in the dermatology office under the care of Dr. Fiona Wright. During this appointment, patients will be examined from head to toe to check for:
• New or changing moles
• Unusual skin growths
• Skin tags
• Wounds that do not heal on their own
• Changes in the skin
During the appointment, Dr. Fiona Wright may also document the location and size of moles on the body to monitor them from year to year. These are often the best indicators of cancer. This is because skin cancer can cause moles to change in color, shape, and size, which is indicative of cancerous cells.
If a growth is found to be concerning, it is best to have a biopsy done. Dr. Fiona Wright will excise the growth and send it to a laboratory for evaluation. If the sample comes back with cancerous cells, patients work with their doctor to determine the best course of action for treatment. This may include:
• Excision
• Mohs micrographic surgery
• Radiation
• Chemotherapy
