What to Expect During Your First Weight Loss Consultation

Patient reviewing a medical weight loss plan with a doctor during a consultation.

Walking into a first medical weight loss appointment can feel easier when you know what will actually be discussed. In Plano, Texas, Fiona Wright, MD leads our weight loss program at Skin M.D. and Beyond. Her postgraduate Family Medicine training at McMaster University adds relevant medical background to a program that follows health markers alongside changes on the scale.

Your First Visit Is About More Than a Number

The initial consultation gives us a chance to understand what you want to change and what may affect your ability to lose weight. Expect a conversation about your health, previous efforts, nutrition, physical activity, and the goals you would like to work toward.

Medication may be part of that discussion, but an appointment does not automatically mean receiving a prescription. Weight loss medications have candidacy considerations, and the appropriate option depends on your needs and medical history. The first visit is an opportunity to determine what makes sense for you rather than starting everyone on the same protocol.

Our broader TRU AGE Wellness Center also reflects this whole-health approach. For additional context, our article on why sustainable weight loss requires more than the scale explains why long-term progress involves more than watching a single number change.

How Progress Is Followed

The current program is organized into four stages: initial assessment, active weight loss, maintenance, and optional post-weight-loss contouring. Once treatment is underway, regular doctor appointments give us an opportunity to review how you are doing and make changes when appropriate.

Monitoring may include weight, BMI, blood pressure, and your overall health. These check-ins matter because the approach that works at the beginning may need to evolve as your body, habits, and goals change.

Maintenance is built into the program rather than treated as an afterthought. The emphasis shifts from losing weight to supporting the habits and strategies that can help you maintain your progress.

After you reach your goal weight, changes such as loose skin or facial volume loss may become more noticeable. Patients who want to address those concerns can separately explore options such as body contouring or facial contouring. These cosmetic services are not a requirement of the weight loss program.
