How ThermiSMOOTH™ Works
Traditionally, the only sure way to tighten skin has been to go in for a time-consuming and invasive eye lift or skin tightening surgery. But happily, the ThermiSmooth procedure is the first aesthetic therapy with temperature control to effectively heat collagen under the skin and stimulate production when sustained heat is applied to it above 40ºC. This initiates a process where the skin begins to tighten and the effects of aging are reduced. The ThermiSmooth™ hand piece delivers this heat in a controlled manner to maximize patient comfort. This means the doctor can deliver the desired therapy without risk of burns.
How does ThermiSMOOTH differ from other Skin Tightening non-invasive devices?
The ReSurFX is a fractional laser treatment which removes layers of skin tissue in a fractionated method – by penetrating the thickness of the skin with microscopic laser beams and removing columns of skin while leaving the skin surrounding each column intact to aid in healing. By removing damaged skin by “fractions”, it allows the skin to heal rapidly. ReSurFX Laser Treatments improve textural surface irregularities, scarred areas, fine wrinkles, sun damage and possibly melasma. It is also safe to use on difficult to treat areas such as neck, arms, hands, chest, as well as tanned skin or skin of color. Fractional Lasers are a major advance in Cosmetic Rejuvenation, as no other treatment devices are as safe for skin of color to remove textural or pigment abnormalities and remodel scars. It is still a groundbreaking technology which can penetrate deeply into the dermis (middle layer of skin), allowing us to break up scars and deeper pigment or skin damage.
The ThermiSMOOTH Experience at Skin MD and Beyond?
A ThermiSMOOTH treatment feels like a relaxing hot stone massage and does not require any anesthetic. To begin, we cleanse the area to be treated and apply gel to the skin. ThermiSMOOTH treatments are accomplished through a delicate handpiece attached to the ThermiRF system. When the handpiece is placed against the skin you will feel the cool tip. When the low energy radiofrequency is administered you will feel a comfortable, warming sensation.
A specific target temperature is set and the hand piece is moved across the treatment area gently in a sweeping or circular pattern. The system will automatically adjust the temperature of the device based on feedback from the patient’s skin. A small area is treated for about 8-12 minutes and the number of treatments will be determined by you and Dr. Wright.
What’s the difference between ThermiTIGHT, ThermiSMOOTH and ThermiSHAPE?
While all three treatments use the ThermiRF energy source, the ThermiTIGHT uses a probe that goes underneath the skin with a surgical approach, while the ThermiSMOOTH and ThermiSHAPE are skin surface treatments performed by our aesthetician, with a wand that moves over the top of the skin.
ThermiTIGHT, performed by Dr. Wright in our Surgical Suite, requires only one treatment. This procedure is ideal for the person who wants maximum skin tightening without the risks of standard surgery. Commonly treated areas include the lower face and neck, the abdomen, the upper arms (“bat wings”) and kness. The ThermiTIGHT treatment is often combined with liposuction if excess fat is also a problem.
ThermiSHAPE treatments are performed the same as the ThermiSMOOTH, with an external surface wand on the skin and requires a series of treatments to achieve maximum results. The wand or “plates” used for the ThermiSHAPE are larger and are able to treat larger body areas such as, the thighs, abdomen, arms and neck. The heat can also penetrate deeper and can reduce inches as well as tighten skin.
What Areas Can be Treated?
ThermiSMOOTH is a non-invasive skin tightening procedure that can be used on the face, neck, and jaw lines of patients. The procedure works by stimulating the natural production of collagen beneath the skin and is ideal for maximum skin smoothing and tightening in small areas, including the eyes, cheeks, mouth, neck and décolleté. As this treatment stimulates collagen production, your skin will look more plump, diminishing fine lines to create a smoother, more youthful look. Patients may undergo several treatments in the same area to further stimulate collagen production and gradually create natural-looking, rejuvenated results.
Who is a Candidate for ThermiSMOOTH?

How Soon will I See the Results?
A series of a minimum of four treatments is required and maximal improvement can be seen after two to three months. However, because every patients is unique, it’s impossible to say exactly how many treatments each patient will need. During the procedure, Dr. Wright will use her expert judgment and guidance to help patients gain the results they want
Are there any Potential Side Effects with ThermiSMOOTH?
Because of the built-in safety features of the ThermiTight RF system, side effects are very unlikely. The device monitors the actual beneath-the-skin temperature, which is kept below the threshold that can cause thermal damage. In addition, an external infrared camera is used to monitor the skin surface temperature.
How long can I Expect the benefits of ThermiSMOOTH to Last?
As the aging process continues, your skin will begin to loosen slightly in 4-6 month. Therefore, we recommend one maintenance treatment every 4-6 months to maintain your maximum results. Results may vary and will depend on the initial amount of laxity, lifestyle and sun exposure.
What will I Look and Feel like after the Procedure?
There is no downtime with these procedures. For some who have skin sensitive to heat, the treated area may be slightly pink or blush for an hour or two after the procedure. There is no swelling, bruising or pain.
Will I still require any Botox or Dysport Treatments?
The procedure is only addressing skin laxity and not wrinkles due to muscle movement or volume loss. If you are still concerned about other aging features of your lower face and neck, caused by movement or deflation, – then you will still require your routine treatments of Botox/Dysport and/or Facial Fillers in these areas including: chin, jowl, jawline, vertical neck bands and décolleté.
