Inflammation and the Immune System

Is Inflammation the Root Cause of Disease?

Inflammation affects nearly every aspect of your health. It is part of the body’s inherent immune response. Sometimes it can be a great help, and other times a disaster!

ACUTE INFLAMMATION can start quickly as part of our body’s natural defense against damaged cells, viruses, bacteria, etc. The job of acute inflammation is to remove harmful or foreign invaders and heal itself. Without this type of inflammation, wounds, infections and tissue damage would just fester and could be deadly.  Chronic Inflammation, however, is another story…

CHRONIC INFLAMMATION has been linked to just about every health condition. Your individual inflammatory response is controlled by your immune system, and if your immune system is compromised then your body doesn’t handle infection or biological stress. The result? You could end up with some out-of-control or chronic inflammation. According to a Harvard Medical School report, “Chronic inflammation plays a central role in some of the most challenging diseases of our time, including rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, asthma, and even Alzheimer’s.”

What Causes Inflammation?

There are a number of things that can cause a highly reactive immune system, which ultimately leads to chronic inflammation. Poor dietary choices, a sedentary lifestyle and environmental triggers are often to blame for chronic cases of inflammation. When we consume foods that are packed with toxins and expose our bodies to environmental toxins, it can affect the immune system. When the body is burdened with these toxins for extended periods of time, these toxins can build up in the body and turn on an inflammatory immune response.

  • Eating Inflammatory Foods
  • Blood Sugar Imbalances
  • Leaky Gut Syndrome
  • Poor Sleep Hygiene
  • Environmental Toxins
  • Chronic Infections

AUTOIMMUNE CONDITIONS have exploded to epidemic proportions over the last few decades. Living with an autoimmune disease can be a lonely experience. Many people wait years to find out why they are sick, because although they have unexplained symptoms, the immune system has not yet damaged enough of the body to be labeled as a disease. This is known as AUTOIMMINE REACTIVITY.  Once enough body destruction has occurred a diagnosis will finally be reached, and most people will receive few options from their doctor. Most will be given a prescriptive medication to treat their AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE. But, for many, too much time has passed, they are too ill, and some damage is not reversible.

Do you Suffer with Chronic Inflammation?

Examples of diseases, conditions, and situations that can result in acute inflammation include:

  • Unexplained sore throat
  • Recurring sinusitis and coughing
  • Skin rashes and skin sensitivities
  • Headaches
  • Asthma
  • Joint pain and inflammation
  • Unexplained Fatigue
  • Stomach ulcers and GI distress
  • Gas and Bloating

How can You Reduce Your Inflammation?

At Tru Age Wellness Center we want to address your inflammation before progression has taken place. Dietary and lifestyle changes are at the forefront of reducing the inflammation in your body. If you eliminate the foods that may be triggering an inflammatory response and uncover foods your body may be sensitive to, you allow your body to reduce that inflammatory response. However, that’s only one step. It’s also important to follow an anti-inflammatory lifestyle and to make healthy lifestyle choices to get your inflammation under control.

  • Get tested for food allergies and sensitivities and remove inflammatory foods
  • Eliminate sugar & processed foods
  • Eliminate unhealthy fats
  • Stick to grass-fed and organic animal products when possible
  • Eat more anti-inflammatory foods such as leafy green vegetables, berries, wild-caught salmon, and walnuts
  • Get a minimum of 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night
  • Reduce stress Include light to moderate exercise into your weekly routine
