Winter Woes: How to Combat Cracked, Dry Lips

winter skin care tips Plano, TXIf you are an avid skier or simply hate the heat, then winter is the season for you. However, if you are like most of the country, come February 1st you are ready to trade in your long johns for a swimsuit. Not only is winter hard on your mental state (Can you say, winter blues?) but it is also hard on your skin and lips. If you have started to notice that your lips are drier than usual, take a stab at these tips from Dr. Fiona Wright. Read on to learn more.

Drink More Water

Oftentimes during the winter, people forget to drink enough water throughout the day. The less water your body has, the more likely you are to show signs of dehydration, like dry, cracked lips. To help your lips stay hydrated and to get rid of those nasty cracks, make sure that you are drinking at least eight 8 ounce glasses of water every single day. To help you stay on this path towards hydration, consider setting the alarm on your phone every hour while you’re at work. As soon as the alarm goes off, drink eight ounces.

Stop Licking Those Lips

If one of your bad habits is always licking or biting your lips, you are actually drying them out even more than they were. Saliva is quickly evaporated, which means that as soon as it comes into contact with your lips that it is gone in just a few seconds— leaving them dryer than before.

Seal in the Moisture

Once your lips are hydrated and you have had enough water to drink, seal in that extra moisture with a chapstick that has an SPF in it. Specifically, look for a chapstick that has all-natural ingredients in it like beeswax or coconut oil. To really help lock in the moisture, apply chapstick to your lips after every meal and right before you go to bed every night.

Keep your lips smooth, sexy, and comfortable for the remainder of winter by following the tips listed above. To learn more about dry and cracked lips and more, or to schedule an appointment, contact Dr. Fiona Wright today!
